or those of us who missed out on either the 2001 or 2007 Pigs on Parade event—or just need a little refresher—the following provides a little background about the event and the organization it benefits.
First launched by the Pike Place Market Foundation in 2001, Pigs on Parade returned in 2007 to help celebrate the Pike Place Market’s Centennial and the Chinese Year of the Golden Pig, bringing public art to Seattle while helping to raise money for the Market's human services.
100 pigs, sponsored by 100 generous piganthropists, celebrated the Market’s 100th anniversary from June to September. They hogged up the streets of Seattle, donning the most creative and outrageous outfits, from blown glass and found objects to etchings and even gum.
In October, the pigs were auctioned off and raised nearly $300,000 for the Pike Place Market’s human service agencies: Pike Market Senior Center, Pike Market Child Care & Preschool, Pike Market Senior Center and the Downtown Food Bank.
In 1971, the citizens of Seattle voted to save the Market from the wrecking ball and also to ensure vital social services for low-income people. The Market Foundation thought a piggy bank could help raise money for these services. Georgia Gerber, a local sculptor, designed Rachel, the Market’s piggy bank.
Rachel is the Market’s bronze piggy bank, and for the past 21 years, she’s raised over $120,000—that’s a lot of bacon! Money collected in Rachel buys services for low-income people at the Pike Market Medical Clinic, Senior Center, Preschool and Downtown Food Bank. Legend has it that you can rub her snout and make a donation for good luck.
What Is the Market Foundation?
The Market Foundation was established in 1982 to support Pike Place Market’s services for low-income people, including the Pike Market Medical Clinic, Pike Market Senior Center, Pike Market, Downtown Food Bank and Pike Market Child Care & Preschool. The Foundation also supports the Market’s heritage programs, public improvements and repairs to the Market’s historic buildings, development of new low-income housing in the Market, and programs that assist the Market’s farmers.
